The Payments Power 50 Annual 2025-26

FROM DINERS CLUB TO DIGITAL THE ONGOING JOURNEY OF CARD PAYMENTS

Cards have become an integral part of consumers’ daily lives, in many cases replacing cash, train tickets and even physical wallets in their entirety. However, cards have not reached their final form, and to explore their ongoing evolution, we must first consider their journey so far. In 1950, Frank McNamara changed the way we think about payments forever. While dining at Major’s Cabin Grill in New York City, McNamara realised he had forgotten his wallet. Fortunately, his wife rescued the situation by bringing him cash, but the experience sparked an idea that would lead to the creation of the first credit card. A year later, McNamara returned to the same restaurant with his partner Ralph

Schneider. This time, he paid the bill with a small cardboard credit card that could be used at 27 other establishments. This simple transaction marked the birth of Diners Club, the first credit card, and laid the foundations for a payment revolution. THE CONVERGENCE OF TECHNOLOGY AND FINANCE Fast forward to today, and the world of payments has evolved dramatically. In the UK alone, there are over 381 million credit card transactions every month, and globally, the payments market is projected to reach $4.78trillion by 2029. While the physical card was once the centrepiece of these transactions, its role is increasingly symbolic, with digital wallets taking centre stage. Beneath this

shift lies a wave of technological innovation; tokenisation, virtual cards, mobile wallets and embedded finance are transforming the way we pay. As the payments industry evolves, three key pillars are shaping the future of card payments: convenience, confidence and control. REDEFINING CONVENIENCE WITH ADVANCED PAYMENT TECHNOLOGIES From the clunky ‘click-clack’ machines of the 1950s to today’s seamless contactless payments, convenience has always been at the heart of payment innovation. The introduction of chip-and-PIN and later contactless technology made paying faster and easier, driving mass adoption.
